USA/Canada Prepaid Long Distance Phone Card
General Market Information

Capacity Problems:
The USA/Canadian prepaid phone card industry is fraught with companies that advertise cards at low rates but have a limited capacity to handle thousands of calls at once.  After you buy the card and go to use it, you get a busy signal or a recorded message telling you to try again later and later.

Hidden Fees:
One of the latest gimmicks of some companies is to advertise cards for 5 cents per minute (CDN$0.05), or even as low as 2 cents per minute (CDN$0.02) or 1 cent per minute (CDN$0.01) - even for calling internationally!  What users don’t know is that they are being billed in 3 or 5 minute increments, even up to 20 minute increments in USA/Canada.  They must use the entire card on one call to get the advertised amount of minutes.  They are paying a connection fee of CDN$0.50 to CDN$3.00 per call, depending on where they are calling.  They are also often being charged daily, weekly, or monthly service fees.

Service or Maintenance Charges:
Some phone card companies realize that a CDN$0.99 monthly service charge makes you less likely to buy, so they instead say CDN$0.50 every two weeks or CDN$0.25 per week.  Some are up to CDN$0.29 per day!  You think "If I use up my card in less than a month or two weeks or a week, I won’t have to pay the service fee."  These company’s cards are programmed to deduct the entire service fee on the first call or just before your minutes are used up.

Example:
You buy a card with an advertised 1.9 cent per minute (CDN$0.019) rate.  It has a CDN$0.99 connection fee, as well as a CDN$0.99 monthly service fee.  You make your first call and you get an answering machine.  You quickly hang up.  How long were you on the phone, perhaps 6 to 60 seconds?  What did that call cost you? CDN$2.04.  Breakdown: CDN$0.99 connection fee, CDN$0.06 usage cost (CDN$0.019 x 3 minutes) and CDN$0.99 monthly service charge taken out on your first call.  You haven’t talked with anyone, but that CDN$10.00 card is now worth less than CDN$8.00.  The most important thing to consider is that the cheapest advertised cards are usually the most expensive to use when every fee is considered.

Instructions for using your Phone Card

1) Dial the toll-free access number (not shown on this website as toll-free access number is for customer use only - will be provided when phone card purchase is made)

2) Enter your Calling Card Number (PIN #) ( found on back of each card - will be provided when phone card purchase is made)

3)    (now enter the telephone number you are trying to call - from Canada or the USA)
    For Canada & USA: Dial 1 + Area Code + Telephone Number
    To International: Dial 011 + Country Code + City Code + Telephone Number

You may make consecutive calls without redialing the access number & entering your PIN.  After completing the first call, simply wait until you are prompted, then enter the next desired phone number.
